UMG-magazine: Illustration & Layout

What is UMG?

UMG-magazine is produced by master graphic designer students of University of Lapland. The first UMG magazine saw the light of day in 2010, so the 2015 UMG is the 6th volume. During its lifespan the magazine has once before sported both a printed and a digital edition, and this marks the second time. The topics of the magazine have usually revolved around the vast world of graphic design, and the newest UMG makes no exception.

Despite its creators and topics, UMG is not just about graphic design jargon, but should prove to be an interesting and enlightening read also for industry outsiders. You can cheack out our website from here. It was Adobe's site of the day in 12th of June 2015.
For the printed publication I made layout and illustrations for three articles, and this is one of them. You can also find it the web version. The subject of the said article Graafikko, muuta maailma (engl. Graphic Designer, change the world) is sustainable designing. It gives tips how to make your design green and is written by Laura Torvinen.
"Which is more ecological: printed or digital product?"
The spread.

The illustration process. Started with a sketch, did the base with illustrator and then added colour and texture in photoshop.
I made about 30 different icons for the illustrations and designed the typeface used in title page.
This is how the article looks like in the phone version. The website also supports desktop (naturally) and tablet.
You can read it in English here.
